Artist's Description

The Red-Eyes of this air scoop appear to be staring at the Boyce MotoMeter which has its place in automotive as being the first after market devise sold for automobiles. Patented in 1912, these devices were the used to read the temperature of the radiator. Boyce manufactured a variety of different models which varied in size and design. The non-pressurized Thermosiphon cooling systems that were widely used until the 1920s led to a low boiling point. The Boyce MotoMeter was a simple device, although it not always warned about engine overheating in time to prevent damage, it offered for the first time information about the engine temperature from the driver’s seat. This particular model is consistent with the 1923 Ford Bucket Roadster it now sits on, the engine however has a bit more power than the original.
